Most Reverend Bernard F. Popp died Friday, June 27th in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 96. He was born December 6, 1917 in Nada, Texas, the son of Ferdinand Popp Jr. and Anna Staff. He was ordained a bishop on July 26, 1983.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Augusta Popp Gerberman, Margaret Popp Swoboda, and Sister Adelaide; brothers, Lawrence and Joe.

Survivors include his Sister Anna Marie of Victoria; sisters-in-law, Bernice Popp and Clara Brummer; cousin, Alfred Berger and wife Gladys; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

After his priestly ordination he served as parochial vicar in St. Agnes, St. Patrick's, St. Joseph's and St. Mary Magdalen Churches of San Antonio. He also served a priest-secretary to Archbishop Robert E. Lucey for 23 years. He served a pastor of St. Mary Magdalen's parish, founding pastor of Holy Spirit parish of San Antonio, pastor of St. Mary's parish of Victoria, of St. Paul's parish and San Fernando Cathedral of San Antonio.

He served a Pro-Synodal Judge and appointed Judical Vicar of the Archdiocesan Tribunal. He served an Archdiocesan Consultor for many years. He was Director of Archdiocesan Catholic Cemeteries for 17 years. On June 7, 1983 he was appointed Titular of Capsus and Auxiliary to Archbishop Patrick F. Flores. During his years as Auxiliary he served as Director of Personnel Services Department, with emphasis as liaison to the Priests' Personnel for the Archbishop.

Bishop Popp retired from Administration, and served as Parochial Vicar at St. Benedict's parish for ten years. He retired to Casa de Padres in June 2003, while helping in parish ministry as needed. In 2008 Bishop Popp moved to Padua Place.

Visitation will begin at 6 pm Friday July 4 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nada, Texas with a rosary to be recited at 7 pm. Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, July 5, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Nada, Texas.
