Eugene Joseph Bubela Sr., also known as "Po-Po", 83, of El Campo passed away on May 8, 2014. He was born on June 12, 1930 in El Campo to the late Joe and Mary Frnka Bubela.

He was a farm laborer. Gene was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of St. Johns Catholic Church in Taiton. His favorite past time was fishing and hunting and tending to his garden and fruit trees. He had a love for horses and participated in many trail rides. Gene was a great cook and was well known for his chicken and dumpling soup. Po-Po always loved to dance with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Leona Sablatura Bubela of El Campo, daughter Kathy Riha and husband Glenn of El Campo, son Randy Bubela and wife Ellen of El Campo sisters Bernice Hajovsky of Ganado, Edith Johnson of Livingston, Betty Hlavinka of El Campo, brothers Edwin Bubela of Lake Jackson and J.J. Bubela of Edna, 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Eugene Bubela Jr., and sister Arlene Hartl.

Visitation will begin on Monday May 12, 2014 at 1 pm at Triska Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 pm Monday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday May 13, 2014 at 10 am at St. Johns Catholic Church in Taiton with Rev. Gabriel Oduro Tawiah officiating. Burial will follow at St. Johns Catholic Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 251.

Pallbearers will be Troy Riha, Todd Riha, Toby Riha, Bradley Bubela, Chris Bubela, and Ronnie Sablatura. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations in memory of Eugene Bubela Sr. may be made to St. Johns Altar Society or St. Johns Catholic Church.
