Norbert W. Meismer of Garwood died May 10, 2014 at the age of 87. He was born March 14, 1927 in Nada to the late J.A. "Jesse" and Annie Leopold Meismer. He was a WWII veteran of the U. S. Army serving from June 28, 1945 until his discharge on December 30, 1946. He received the WWII American Theater Ribbon and WWII Victory Medal. He achieved the rank of PFC and was an airplane engine mechanic. He worked on the B-29 planes while stationed in Mississippi. He returned to Nada after his discharge and began farming cotton on the family farm. In later years, he farmed rice and raised cattle. To supplement his farm income, he attended welding and plumbing classes and became a first class welder and plumber and assisted with the plumbing when the Co-op was built.
He was a member of the Garwood Farmers Co-op and served as a director for many years. He also served as a Director for 29 years on the WCEC Board of Directors. He assisted with the construction of the Garwood-Nada Veterans Memorial in Garwood. Norbert was a lifelong and devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Church Choir, St. Joseph's Society and the Nada Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his sister Irene Bittner of Garwood, sister-in-law Anita Meismer of Nada, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leon and James Meismer, sisters Sr. Mary Hilda Meismer, IWBS and Dorothy Haynes Standley.
Visitation will begin 2 pm Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Triska Funeral Home, with a KC Rosary being recited at 6:30 pm. The Funeral Mass will be 2 pm Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nada, with Rev. Joseph Vrana officiating. Graveside services will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery under the auspices of the American Legion Post 251.
Pallbearers are Jody Meismer, Chris Meismer, Kevin Meismer, Brandon Meismer, Paul Bittner and Frank Bittner.

The family extends their grateful appreciation to St. Mary's pastor, Rev. Joe Vrana, for his words of comfort, and to the staff at Garden Villa Convalescent Health Center for their excellent and professional care.
